How time runs, we have already reached the last 10 days of Ramadan (well 9 now...) and one of the last beautiful moments of Ramadan is praying Qiyam Al-Layl.
How lovely and wonderful it is to wake up in the middle of the night and pray!

The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu 'alayhi wa salllam) said: "Whoever stands to pray in Ramadhan with sincere faith and hope for the reward of Allah will have his past sins forgiven"

Waking up in the middle of the night was a regular practice of the Prophet (sallallahu 'alayhi wa salllam) and his companions.
Aisha (radhiallahu anha) said: "Do not abandon Qiyam al-layl, for the Messenger of Allah (sallalahu 'alayhi wa sallam) never left it. If he happened to be unwell or if he felt tired, he would pray sitting".

Make the most out of Ramadan, it only comes once 1 year !

Indulge yourself with a really real hot chocolate! Cut any milk chocolate (I used Galaxy Ripple) into pieces and put it in a tall glass. Pour in boiling hot milk, until glass is almost full. Mix it, and enjoy!
Its really heart warming and a sweet treat after a stressful day. You should really try it!

I had the great opportunity to interview the Muslim Graphic Designer; Wissam Birouty!

He is a young talented graphic designer from Damascus/Syria. His work is clean, simple, and very professional. It catches the eye, and messages of his work are delivered directly, almost without words!
I would love you to find out more about this talented graphic designer and his work!
As mentioned above, the interview is exclusive on this blog and for this blog. Now read on and enjoy! Photography from Wissam, Edited by Zinah...

1. Tell us more about yourself...
My Name is Wissam Birouty, Syrian, Born in Damascus 1987, I moved to the United Arab Emirates in 2006, I started as a freelancer in the beginning in the capital Abu Dhabi, then with a small Advertising Agency for one year, then I worked in a mother company of a Television Channel, it was a good opportunity for me to improve myself.

Then I moved back a freelancing again for 1 year after launching a media city in Abu Dhabi, I worked with many international agencies (UK, US, Italy..etc..).
Now I got a good offer with a new huge Media Company in Abu dhabi and I am working there.

2. Do you classify yourself as a Graphic Designer?
Yes, I am a Graphic Designer, Specialized, Printing, Branding & Advertising
I DO NOT do websites, 3d and animation ...
I can do corporate identity for any company, I do promotion campaigns & full Advertising concepts...For any other things like Websites and Video promotions etc...I can give the concepts and the directing to go with the aim of the media campaign.

3. What inspired you of becoming a Graphic design? And when was that?
5 years ago, I started to study the typography, and then I started to use Photoshop to convert the typography to Image on a Soft-copy.
Then I started a Graphic Design course, then a Business & Marketing course.

4. What do you think of Islam and Art? As in creative fields within Islam...
As a graphic designer, I was thinking all the time about why we don't (as a graphic designer) do something as a Visual art to present Islam in a creative way. Like any advert has a creative concept containing a message it should be sent out to the audience to attract them to know more about Islam...Truly I am not a religious man, but I love my Religion and proud to be a Muslim.

5. I really love your work, it’s very clean, simple and yet very effective. Very pleasing to the eye as well. What are your inspirations?
Three words... the design should be Simple, Direct, and professional

Simple to make it easy to understand for all types of people especially I am working in a country that has more than 80 nationality, the Arab is only 50% of the residence here (UAE), there are too many cultures mixed together, also don't forget that I’m working in the most open country in the middle east with a perfect economy and most popular place for a lot of American and European companies. That is why we need to be clear and direct to be understood for all of those professional companies.

6. What software do you use? And are there any other materials you use?
The applications are Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, Indesign, Acrobat. And my OS is MAC OSX.

7. Tell me more about your work for Al Dafrah Marketing & Advertising?
Actually as I mentioned before it was the professional step for me to work in this company because all of our art work was for a Magazine and TV Channel, I really loved that place because working in a media is different than working in the advertising campaign, it supported me to get a lot of experiences, working in TV Studios with Producers.

It was a very good opportunity for me. Also we worked there for many Huge companies for branding and advertising.

8. What is your favorite piece you have ever created?
It was a proposal for a Full Mall Branding called (DELMA MALL)

9. Could you tell us about any upcoming projects you have?
I am now working on a branding proposal for a new huge exhibition, it's a new exhibition placed in the UAE, it has a branding logo with full advertising and media campaign.

10. Graphic designers are always an inspiration to others; creative students in particular...What word of advice cans you give to fellow Muslim graphic designers and any creative Muslims?

I wish to meet a lot of creative people in the Arab world that is the reason why I’ve made a group in Facebook for Arab graphic designers called (Arab Creative Association) I wish if you can help me to share those with other. The goal of that one is to share the Works, Resources and ideas to improve our graphic design concepts and to brainstorm, and we may create a competition between the designers to come with a creative campaign for ISLAM.

Thank you very much for your interview and I wish you the best.

Giving charity is very important, to help brothers and sisters who are not as fortuned as others.
The Prophet (sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam) was the most generous during Ramadan. he was more generous with good deeds than the blowing wind.

The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam) also said: "The best charity is the charity given in Ramadan"

So brothers and sisters, be generous and give charity :)

I love Ramadan for many reasons, but one of them is praying Taraweeh. It's so wonderful and great to see so many Muslims coming to the mosque and pray together.

Did you know that completing the Taraweeh prayer with the Imam is counted as standing the whole night in prayer? Isn't that great? Of course it is!
The Prophet (sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam) said: "Whoever remains with the Imam (in prayer) until he completes the prayer will have the night written for him as one who performed Qiyam al-layl"

Yes, this is still the blog 'ZINAH'...Doesn't it look simple and trendy, no?
After 2 days and nights of struggle with xml, I have finally figured it out and ACTUALLY learned more about xml! Pure coding can kill you (not literally of course haha) but it is hard and frustrating! After the war against xml, I got to to my favourite part, DESIGNING the blog :D that was easy and painless ;)
Lots of trial and error (with xml), but at the end a nice and clean design for the blog :)

I hope you guys like it, and I guess you have noticed my weird intro? Well its about time you should get to know me and the real purpose of this blog...I will inshallah put up stand alone pages, for readers to find out about this blog, how to contact me (you can also find my contact details at the bottom of this blog) and how to get social :)

And of course, I will be posting more about Ramadan iA!

While I was struggling with the blog design and xml, I decided to bake a sweet treat; Royal Gala Apple Tarts. This is perfect for a little coffee break after Taraweeh Prayers :)

Ok for this delicious dessert, you need:
- Puff Pastry (ready rolled or none ready rolled)
- 2 Royal Gala Apple, or any sweet apples
- Jam
- Sugar
- Butter
- Love and Passion :)

You start of with preheating the oven to 220
°C. Roll the puff pastry 1cm thin and cut it into 8 squares (if ready rolled, cut the puff pastry into 8 squares). Then you have to core the apples and slice thinly. Cook them in hot water with 1 tablespoon sugar and 2 teaspoon cinnamon.
Let it cook for 5-7mins. Don't over cook it!
Then use some of the sugar and cinnamon water (from the cooked apple) and add 2 tablespoon of strawberry jam (or any desired jam flavour) and 4 tablespoon of sugar.
Let the mixture cook, until its thin (cause it will thicken once it's cool).
Spread butter on a baking tray (this will make it none sticky) and spread very little butter on top of the cut puff pastry. Put apple on top (2 slices for each square will do) and bake in the oven for 12mins or until puffed and golden.
Once this is done, spread the jam mixture on the pastry while its hot. This shell serve 4-8 people (depending on how many slice each person eats).

Ramadan is the month in which the first revelation of the Qur'an took place. Muslims should therefore recite the Qur'an even more than usual during Ramadan.

The Qur'an is mainly written in arabic. However not many can read in arabic, but fear not my dear, there are Transliterations of the Qur'an. I personally can't read arabic very well, and alhamdulillah I have found and bought a transliterated version of the Nobel Qur'an, with arabic text and English Translation. MashAllah, it makes it so much easier for none-arabic readers to read the Qur'an.

There are so many out there, but I personally would recommend the one by Dr. Muhammad Taqi-ud-Din Al-Hilali and Dr. Muhammad Muhsin Khan.

Tonight is the night of Ramadan, I wish you all a blessed holy month, with lots of love, joy, happiness, purification, prayers and dua's. May Allah accept all of our wishes and dua's, Ameen.

I like to stay organised and to sort of have a list to help me with what to do next and to stay on track. I'm sure you know the 'To Do List" and many of you may even have a list. For Ramadan, these are the things to do:
1. Praying the Taraweeh and Qiyam Al-Layl
2. Giving Charity (Sadaqah)
3. Reciting the Qur'an
4. Sitting and making dua's until Sunrise
5. Remembering Allah, Supplication Him and Seeking His Forgivness
7. Increase on good deeds.
8.( Observing I'tikaf...can't be really done by those who work, have family or go to school)
9. (Performing 'Umrah during Ramadan...for those who can afford it)

Inshallah, details of the things listed above will follow one by one andI will keep you posted on more exciting stuff about Ramadan and things to do during Ramadan :)

Happy Fasting

From my previous entry, I have asked questions about how to look for a potential husband or wife and the important qualities of a husband or wife.
Now days people date, they talk to each other and they go out to get to know each other. I am in no position to say what is permissible and what isn't. I am sure as long as your family is aware of the presence of the potential husband or wife and accepts you to see him or her with a presence of a muslim adult, there should be no harm. Yet again, I am in no position to tell you what to do and what not to do.
However, here is a simple list of the qualities to look for (This has nothing to do with looks, or type, it's more about the experience, skills and characteristics):
Husband:
• Understanding and commitment of Islam
• Honesty, integrity and reliability
• Social and life skills relevant to men
• Sacrifice and ability to accommodate
• Education and professional expertise (primarily to earn for family)
• Family Background
• Strength of character as in the role of a provider and protector in the family
• Positive outlook, magnanimity and broadmindedness
• Ability to cope with anger, crises and external pressure
• Competence and enthusiasm to lead a family in Islamic ethos
• Willingness to consult
• Loyalty to wife in goodness
• Equity, impartiality and sense of justice
• Masculine features, e.g. toughness and stamina
Ok ladies, the man does NOT have to tick all of the things listed above, I'm not sure if that's even possible? Some of the qualities listed above are important to have a stable, long lasting and happy marriage and to start building a family, but you can't chase a man away, just because he doesn't have all of the qualities.
Not only do women look for the important qualities, men also do!
Important qualities of a wife:
• Understanding and commitment of Islam
• Honesty, integrity and reliability
• Social and life skills relevant to men
• Sacrifice and ability to accommodate
• Education and professional expertise (primarily to raise children in Islam)
• Family Background
• Loyalty to husband in goodness
• Liveliness

I'm not too sure whether I agree with both of the husband's and wife's
qualities given...This is a list from the book called 'Marriage and Family
Building in Islam' by Dr. Muhammad Abdul Bari
What do you think? Do you agree or disagree? Please feel free do drop a
comment and your thoughts :)
